Katrina Heather
Advanced Accredited BWY Teacher Qualified Pilates Instructor REPS Level 4 Exercise Consultant for the Management of Lower Back Pain
Katrina first came to yoga in her late teens and was captivated by its holistic impact on her sense of well-being. In her early thirties, following several episodes of acute sciatica, yoga became a force for change in her life. She experienced how yoga practices gave her the insights and strength to move forward and decided to train as a teacher, qualifying with the British Wheel of Yoga in 2005.
Katrina was later drawn to the Krishnamacharya tradition and studied TKV Desikachar’s teachings of yoga as a healing practice. She learned to work with students on an individual basis and qualified as a yoga therapist registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council CNHC).
Believing that yoga should be adapted to the individual, Katrina uses all the tools of yoga in her teaching, including asana, chanting, meditation, philosophy and awareness of the breath.
In 2006 Katrina undertook a year’s training in Pilates, learning both classical mat based work and use of the large Pilates equipment (including the Reformer and Wunda Chair). She now teaches Pilates for rehabilitation from injuries and chronic back conditions as well as general strengthening and stretching to improve postural awareness and maintain health and wellbeing.
In recent years meditation has become a larger part of Katrina’s own practice, having studied MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) with Anni Sanderson, Meditation in the Yoga tradition with Gill Lloyd and Sarah Ryan and Buddhist mindful meditation with Santoshni Perera. The wisdom of these teachings are evident in Katrina’s approach to her students and clients, encouraging mutual respect, fun in learning and self-empowerment.
Katrina now works with a broad spectrum of clients including the elderly, people living with cancer, sufferers of chronic back pain, the able bodied, dancers and the super fit!
Dividing her week between Cambridge and London makes for a busy schedule, but Katrina ensures she finds plenty of time to spend with her husband Nigel, their friends and family and her weekly treat, a ballroom and Latin dance class.
