Yoga - our approach ...Yoga is a holistic system for creating and sustaining balance and harmony in our lives. The word yoga contains many layers of meaning and is frequently translated as “yoking” or “union”. Although often seen and presented, as just a physical exercise regime for the young and flexible, it is so much more than a series of physical poses or postures. Through the linking of mind, body and breath, yoga can help us to feel energised and revitalised, refreshed and enlivened. This is reached by working in a mindful way with all the tools of yoga, which include posture work, breath, relaxation and meditation. Yoga is a system that can improve the quality of our lives. It can play a useful role in alleviating stress by encouraging us to be present in the moment, helping us to recognise and therefore reduce tension. Yoga encourages good functioning of the body’s systems to promote our health and well-being. Sue and Katrina are Advanced Accredited British Wheel of Yoga teachers teaching in the tradition of TKV Desikachar and his father Professor T. Krishnamacharya. This is more widely known as “viniyoga”. Viniyoga is an ancient Sanskrit word which means “appropriate application” and can be applied to any process but here it is used in the application of yoga. Rather than a style it is an approach that applies the tools of yoga to the individual, addressing their own unique needs, experiences and abilities in order for them to release their individual potential. “As long as there is breath we can do something” Krishnamacharya |
